The first cup of coffee has never really been about the coffee.
It’s about the quiet.
Before the phone starts buzzing. Before the news starts shouting. Before the day begins making demands.
For a few precious minutes, the world seems willing to wait.
I like sitting with a hot mug and watching the morning wake up. The light changes. The birds get busy. The neighborhood slowly comes to life.
Most days, there isn’t anything profound waiting to be discovered.
Just a chance to breathe.
I’ve noticed that some of the best thoughts arrive when you’re not chasing them. They show up while you’re staring out a window, watching steam rise from a coffee cup, or listening to nothing at all.
Age has taught me that not every moment has to be productive.
Sometimes it’s enough to simply be present.
The coffee eventually gets cold.
The day eventually gets moving.
But for a little while, there’s peace in that chair and gratitude in that cup.
And that’s not a bad way to start the morning.
